What's in a Generated PDF

Every file is a valid PDF that opens in any PDF reader. Each page shows its page number, the generation date and placeholder Lorem ipsum text, so you can see at a glance which test file you're looking at.

The number of pages grows with the size you choose: about 20 pages per MB, so a 1 MB file has 20 pages and a 5 MB file has 100. The rest of the requested size is filled with padding after the end of the document, which PDF readers ignore.

Exact File Sizes

Enter any size from 0.01 MB (about 10 KB) up to 1,000 MB and the file comes out at exactly that number of bytes. FileMock uses binary megabytes, so 1 MB = 1,048,576 bytes and 25 MB = 26,214,400 bytes.

Very small sizes are the exception: a PDF needs a minimum structure, so targets below about 7 KB produce the smallest possible file, around 7 KB.

Common Uses for Fake PDF Files

  • Upload size limits: generate files just under and just over the limit, for example 24.9 MB and 25.1 MB.
  • Large PDF performance: check how viewers, previews and text extraction handle documents with hundreds or thousands of pages.
  • Email attachment limits: test what happens when an attachment is larger than the mail provider allows.
  • Storage and quota testing: fill a bucket, folder or user quota with files of a known size.
  • Document pipelines: run conversion, indexing and virus scanning jobs on realistic files without using real documents.

What It Doesn't Create

Generated PDFs contain text only. If your test needs password-protected PDFs, scanned images, fillable forms or PDF/A archives, use a dedicated PDF tool for those cases.
